Robinson Cano is well known for his smooth swing and the way he makes the game look so easy. The way he makes the game look easy appears to many to just be lazy behavior. One person that believes Cano could have shown more hustle is New York Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long.
Before Robinson Cano signed his monster $240 million contract with the Seattle Mariners, he worked closely with Kevin Long. Long is very proud of Cano and his accomplishments as a Yankee, but there are improvements that he tried to make in Cano’s game that were not accepted. As much as Long and the rest of the Yankees staff tried they could not get Cano to hustle, as he often appeared to be “dogging” it. When asked about Cano and the lack of hustle situation Long said “If somebody told me I was a dog,’’ “I’d have to fix that. When you choose not to, you leave yourself open to taking heat, and that’s your fault. For whatever reason, Robbie chose not to.”
With that statement made by Long, it makes you think if Cano is actually just lazy. From an outside perspective I think there are times when Cano could hustle more often. As he gets older he will have to give more effort as his body ages and breaks down. He will have to focus more on hard work and hustle as he gets older instead of doing what he is doing now, which using natural ability. The hope is that he will be able to develop that extra effort aspect the longer he plays. If he doesn’t develop that extra effort, then Cano’s numbers may start to decline and this contract signing could be a costly mistake by the Mariners.
