Athletes coming to new teams are always paying off players in order to get their favorite jersey number. Roger Clemens once bought Carlos Delgado a Rolex for the #21 in Toronto, Brian Jordan bought 3rd base coach Fredi Gonzalez a $40,000 motorcycle in exchange for the #33 in Atlanta, and Jeff Feagles sold the New York Giants #10 to Eli Manning for a week vacation in Florida. There are all kinds of stories about stuff like this, but this is something that I have not seen before. Check out the video after the jump.

Indianapolis Colts v New York Giants

Yesterday was National Sibling Day. As the oldest of three kids, I know the importance of having great siblings. Sports have seen its fair share of sibling rivalries over the years, so in honor of National Sibling Day, here are my top 10 sibling combinations I’ve seen in my lifetime. (I’m only 19 so if I miss some great sibling duos from the past I apologize.)

Who is the face of the NFL? This is not an easy question to answer right now. From rookies, to veterans who have just played their last games, the league is full of superstars right now. To pick just one is not a simple task. Let’s go over the candidates.

As I promised my fans last week I would cash in a good solid week to make up for the World Series week. Solid is an understatement as we here at TSB went 4-0 on **LOCKS** and 9-5 on the week. I have done my studying and even though it looks like Vegas has some tough spreads this week im am well prepared as I am giving 5 **LOCKS** this week!

The NFL 2012 season starts today as the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants face off against the Dallas Cowboys, which got me thinking, is Eli Manning married?  Sure enough, he is, and wife Abby McGrew is gorgeous.  Manning married his college sweetheart back in 2008.  One thing I noticed when searching for pictures of Abby, she rarely steps out without her man.  Check out some photos of this week’s WAG, Abby McGrew: Read the rest of this entry »

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints are masters of the “Screen Pass”

Over the past decade, the NFL has transformed from a ground and pound league, to an ultra heavy passing league.  In 2002, four QB’s threw for over 4,000 yards.  Last year ten did.  And of those ten, three threw for over 5,000 yards (Eli Manning had 4,933).  We also saw Drew Brees break Dan Marino’s record for passing yards in a season, with 5,476.

When you see those gaudy passing statistics, you would figure that the QB’s are taking seven step drops and just letting it fly, 50 yds down the field.  While there are some teams that do have QB’s that are able do that, the short passing game is where they rack up the yards.  With the evolution of the slant route (Jets fans LOVE this pass pattern), it has essentially taken over as a run for some teams.  If you have a wide receiver who can get off the line quickly and cleanly, then cut to the middle of the field, it’s an instant six to ten yard gain if he holds on.  But while that pass play can lead to big gains, there’s nothing like the screen pass. Every year we get into week 8 or 9 of the NFL season and say to ourselves, “Man I had no idea ___ was going to be good/much better this year”.  Last year the two teams fans probably said that the most about were the 49ers or the Lions.  And then who can forget the epic “handshake” at the end of their game?

Granted, the 49ers play in the horrid NFC West, but no one in their right mind would have chosen Alex Smith to be the QB to lead their team to a division title.  That was supposed to be Sam Bradford.  But with the Rams riddled with injuries, the 49ers and first year head coach Jim Harbaugh, laid the smack down.

As week 1 of the preseason has now wrapped up, I have scoured the teams and have come up with 5 teams that could fly under the radar this season and surprise people. Read the rest of this entry »

Should the Patriots even bother showing up on Sunday?   That’s the question that I have been asking myself for about a week now.

Living in the New York City area allows me to listen to the best sports talk radio anywhere.  90% of the people who call up WFAN (Sorry 1050 ESPN Radio.  If your signal can’t reach 30 miles outside Manhattan and has hosts like Michael Kay and Stephen A. Smith, I’m not listening to you.  Those two make Mike Francesa sound like the nicest guy on the radio.) are knowledgeable fans who make good points.  Sure, you’ll get a few per hour that live in a bubble, but that’s to be expected.

So when the line came out Monday of the Patriots -3 against the Giants in the Super Bowl, I thought it was a little low, but -3 was fine with me.  Then came the newspaper articles and phone calls.

“Deah ain’t no way dat duh GMEN ain’t blowin’ da Pats out!  Brady sux, he ain’t dat good.  Eli beat em duh last two times day played!” Read the rest of this entry »

If I were a gambling man, I would have been a rich man after last week.  4 games.  All 4 correct.  Now, I’m not going to puff out my chest just yet, because this is the NFL and everyone knows that the unexpected always happens.

Wild Card Weekend Results

Scott aka “Earl” (@ttlsportsblog) 4-0 (doubted Tebow’s will to win)

Chris aka “Hook” (@HookTSB) 3-1 (picked all the winners)

Connor (@CJScutts) 1-3 (2-2 winners)

New Orleans -3.5 @ San Francisco

@ttlsportsblog – I’ve been burned all year by San Fran.  And boy do I want them to prove me right this weekend.  I’ve thought they are a mediocre team that’s gotten by on a solid defense.  Bottom line is that you need to be able to score in this league. When you have a QB who hasn’t thrown for over 300yds in a single game this year, you obviously can’t get behind early.  I just don’t see the 49ers putting up 28 or so points on offense.  BUT……I do see them making a big defensive or special teams play that will make this game close.  The Saints on grass will be slowed down, but that just means that Brees will be throwing the short ball all game and at a 75% clip.  I like the Saints to win, but not cover.  27-24 Saints win on a last-minute FG.

@HookTSB - San Francisco had an excellent year.  Their defense was top-notch and Alex Smith did enough not to lose games.  Their biggest wins during the regular season were Philly, NYG and Pittsburgh.  They lost to their 2 other quality opponents in Dallas and Baltimore, and dropped a 3rd to the lowly Cardinals.  They haven’t played a team like the Saints all year.  Drew Brees is rolling right now.  If his public image was more religious and less family-man, we’d all be calling him Breesus.  Saints -3.5 could be the easiest call of the weekend, I’m thinking blow-out city 38-21. 2011 was a great year for sports (aren’t they all?).  So with the new year just around the corner, here are TSB’s New Year’s Resolutions for some of the biggest people/organizations in the world of sports.  If you have any suggestions, please comment in the box at the end of the article and we’ll make sure to add them.

Carlos Beltran/Drew Brees – To get the growths/birthmarks removed from their faces, ears, or wherever they may be.

Metta World Peace – To get his name tattooed across his back like Vince Young.
