Player: Michael Wacha

Bio: Another prospect, another Cardinal. That is not the only similarity between Shelby Miller and Wacha, as they both hail from Texas. Again, he was also accepted to play at Texas A&M, but unlike Miller, elected to play college ball. In his final season, Read the rest of this entry »

In this series I will be writing analyses of the best young pitchers and position players that the MLB has to offer.

Minor-League-Baseball-LogoTo help celebrate Major League Baseball’s opening day, it is time for another edition of Promising Prospects. All three of these guys are high upside prospects who are at least a year or two away from the majors. As we all know, the prospect game is extremely hit or miss, and guys like this are good examples of that. Even though all three have very good talent, I would be shocked if all of them end up being MLB regulars. Anyways, it is time for my profiles on Miguel Sano, Carlos Martinez, and Brandon Nimmo.

Opening day is exactly one week away. I for one, am getting very excited for some meaningful baseball games. Today I am going to make my predictions for the National League in the 2013 season. The National League seems to be a little bit more wide open than the American League (which I previewed and predicted here) which makes for some tougher and more interesting calls.

One of my favorite things to follow as a sports fan is Minor League Baseball. The mystery of a prospect is very intriguing to me. Projecting prospects is an extremely hard thing to do. For every Derek Jeter there are hundreds of guys who never even get a chance in MLB. When I was first given this opportunity to write for Total Sports Blog, I knew that I wanted to write something about prospects. I have decided, instead of just making a list of top prospects, I am going to hand pick a few guys every so often and write a little bit about each player. Some of these guys will top of the line prospects, and others will be under the radar guys that I particularly like. Today, I will profile Oscar Taveras of the Cardinals, Gary Sanchez of the Yankees, and Tony Zych of the Cubs.

“I wonder what kind of reaction Carlos Beltran is going to get from the fans when he comes up for his first at-bat?”  That was the question of the day on Twitter/WFAN up until 7:15 pm on June 1st 2012.

Could you have ever imagined that no one would even care after the final out was recorded?

How about the fan’s reaction after the first no-hitter in New York Mets history?  That’s the reaction that we well all remember.

I’m going to remember that after the 5th inning, my Mom and wife asked me to run to the store for them.  It was only for milk and some granola bars for my daughter, but what if that caused Johan’s no-no to be broken up?  As I am deciding wether or not to go, Carlos Beltran’s mole smoked a ball over the third base bag in the 6th inning that appeared to look like it was fair.  Oh well, sucks for him.  Luckily the game wasn’t being played at Roland Garros or the ump would have used the ball mark on the chalk to call it a double. While looking around on Twitter Wednesday, one of my Mets Twitter compadres, (@metsfanmurph) had posted his 5 worst sports losses as a fan.  I knew I had read a column somewhere like this before, and then I saw he made a Bill Simmons reference.  Light bulb goes on.

In my adult life, lets say since 1999, I have experienced exactly one championship and countless heart breaking, knife in the stomach, kick in the balls losses.  Thank you 2003 Syracuse Orangemen for helping a brother out.  That’s 1 for my last 68. Read the rest of this entry »
